Businessman and alleged police informer Tumelo Nku is expected to return to the Madlanga Commission on Friday as his testimony continues over his alleged involvement in the Aeroton cocaine seizure.
The Commission is probing events surrounding the interception of more than 700 kilograms of cocaine by police in Aeroton, south of Johannesburg, in July 2021.
During previous proceedings, Nku faced extensive questioning about more than R60,000 in cash that he was carrying on the day of the operation.
Nku has maintained that he preferred travelling with cash rather than using bank cards, claiming it allowed him to move around more discreetly. He also told the Commission that the money was intended to cover his travel expenses.
However, evidence leader Advocate Teboho Mosikili challenged that explanation by presenting bank records showing that Nku had used his bank card to pay toll fees while travelling between Johannesburg and Durban.
The Commission also heard that the bulk of the cash remained untouched when Nku was found in possession of it, raising further questions about whether the money had in fact been intended for travel expenses.
When proceedings resume, Nku is expected to continue answering questions relating to the source of the cash, why he was carrying such a large amount of money, and his alleged role in the events surrounding the Aeroton cocaine seizure.
His testimony forms part of the Commission's broader investigation into the circumstances surrounding the high-profile drug bust and the conduct of individuals linked to the operation.
