Motorists across parts of South Africa have been urged to drive with extreme caution after thick fog and mist severely reduced visibility on major roads in several interior regions on Tuesday morning.

A heavy blanket of mist has affected large areas of Gauteng, Mpumalanga and sections of the Free State, creating hazardous driving conditions on highways, arterial routes and residential streets.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department says visibility has dropped significantly, warning that conditions are changing rapidly and could lead to serious collisions, including multi-vehicle pile-ups.

Officers have been deployed to key intersections and high-risk areas to assist motorists and manage traffic flow as the dense fog persists.

Spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the situation remains dangerous and unpredictable.

“A thick blanket of fog and mist has significantly reduced visibility across major arterial routes, highways, and residential areas throughout most parts of the city. These conditions can change rapidly within seconds, drastically increasing the risk of multi-vehicle pile-ups and serious accidents,” Fihla said.

He urged drivers to adjust their behaviour to the conditions, stressing the importance of patience and caution on the roads.

“We urge all motorists to exercise extreme caution, patience, and vigilance on the roads this morning,” he added.

Authorities have advised motorists to reduce speed, increase following distances, and use low-beam headlights and rear fog lights where necessary. Drivers are also encouraged to stay within lane markings and avoid overtaking or sudden lane changes.

Fihla warned against the use of high beams, noting that they reflect off the mist and further reduce visibility, and cautioned that hazard lights can confuse other road users.

He also stressed that poor visibility does not excuse negligent driving.

“Not being able to see is legally not a defence in the event of a crash. If conditions are too severe, we strongly advise delaying your trip until the fog lifts,” he said.

Motorists are further reminded not to stop in the middle of the roadway. If visibility drops to near zero, drivers should safely pull off the road.

Officials have appealed for defensive driving and heightened awareness of pedestrians and cyclists as the fog continues to affect large parts of the interior.
