Former attorney and reality television personality Peet Viljoen briefly appeared in the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Thursday, where his case was postponed to 26 June for a formal bail application.
Viljoen will remain in custody after the State indicated that it intends to oppose his release on bail.
The bail application could not proceed on Thursday as prosecutors said several verification processes, including confirmation of Viljoen's residential address, were still outstanding.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said Viljoen is facing a total of 400 charges, including corruption, fraud, theft, perjury and forgery.
The charges relate to an alleged R100 million property fraud scheme that was allegedly orchestrated 16 years ago.
Viljoen's latest court appearance marks a significant development in a long-running series of legal troubles for the former lawyer, who was struck off the roll of attorneys in 2011.
He was taken into police custody on Tuesday evening after being deported from the United States.
The deportation followed his arrest alongside his wife, Mel Viljoen, on allegations of shoplifting.
Authorities have not disclosed further details regarding the extradition process or the circumstances surrounding his return to South Africa.
The matter is expected to return to court next week, when Viljoen is set to formally apply for bail as the State prepares to argue against his release.
