A 13-year-old learner has died and 14 others have been seriously injured following a collision between a minibus taxi and a truck near Sepanapudi in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo.

According to Limpopo Department of Transport spokesperson Mashudu Mabata, the crash occurred when the minibus driver reportedly changed lanes in an attempt to avoid a pedestrian who was walking on the roadway.

The manoeuvre resulted in a collision with an oncoming truck.

Emergency services responded to the scene, where the learner was declared dead. Fourteen people, including the drivers of both vehicles, sustained serious injuries and were transported for medical treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Mabata said traffic officials and police remain on site conducting clearance operations and managing traffic flow in the area.

“Motorists are advised that traffic officials and the police remain on the scene conducting clearance operations until the remaining lane is reopened to traffic. Road users are urged to exercise caution and patience, reduce speed, and adhere to all road safety regulations,” he said.

Motorists travelling through the area have been urged to expect delays while emergency and recovery teams continue their work.
