Residents in oPhongolo and surrounding areas in northern KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to remain alert after a lion escaped from the Mkuze Falls Game Reserve.

According to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, the animal was last spotted near the R66 road between oPhongolo and KwaNongoma two days ago.

Authorities have appealed to members of the public not to panic, but to immediately report any sightings of the lion to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officials or the nearest police station.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said residents should exercise caution if they encounter the animal and avoid actions that could provoke it.

He advised people to slowly move away while maintaining visual contact with the lion, raise their arms to appear larger and avoid running, as this could trigger a chase response.

Mntambo also recommended that people remain together if they are in a group, as larger groups are less likely to be approached by predators.

He explained that escaped lions often seek out water sources, dense vegetation or areas where livestock are present, while generally avoiding noisy and heavily populated locations.

Mntambo said lions are naturally wary of humans and will typically avoid contact, but may become aggressive if they feel threatened or cornered.

While lion escapes are relatively uncommon, he noted that such incidents do occur from time to time when animals breach enclosures or fencing.

He pointed to a recent incident involving a lion that escaped from Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park and was subsequently recaptured and returned safely to the reserve.

Wildlife officials continue to monitor the situation and are working to locate the animal.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, avoid approaching the lion under any circumstances and report any sightings immediately to assist authorities in securing its safe return.
