Five additional senior South African Police Service (SAPS) officers have been suspended in connection with the controversial Medicare24 contract, as investigations into the matter continue.
The latest suspensions include four generals and one senior officer, adding to a growing list of high-ranking officials implicated in the procurement scandal.
Several senior SAPS officials have already been placed on suspension, while others are facing criminal charges for their alleged involvement in the multi-million-rand contract.
Chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police, Ian Cameron, has welcomed the latest suspensions, describing them as a necessary step towards ensuring accountability within the police service.
Cameron said decisive action against those implicated in wrongdoing is essential to restoring public confidence in SAPS and strengthening oversight within the organisation.
However, he also cautioned that the growing number of suspensions could create a leadership vacuum within the police service, potentially affecting operational effectiveness.
Despite these concerns, Cameron stressed that accountability must remain the priority and called for investigations to be concluded without delay.
He further urged law enforcement authorities to expedite prosecutions against those facing criminal charges, saying swift action is necessary to demonstrate that misconduct and corruption within the police service will not be tolerated.
The Medicare24 contract has come under intense scrutiny amid allegations of irregularities, prompting both internal disciplinary processes and criminal investigations.
