The National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS) has activated a comprehensive operational plan in response to unrest linked to undocumented migrants in several parts of South Africa.

Law enforcement authorities say the strategy is aimed at maintaining public order, preventing violence and addressing criminal activity associated with recent tensions in affected communities.

According to NATJOINTS, the operational plan focuses on three key areas: enhanced police visibility and rapid deployment capabilities, intelligence-driven operations, and targeted crime-combating initiatives.

Authorities are also monitoring and investigating individuals and groups suspected of inciting violence, spreading misinformation, or encouraging attacks against foreign nationals and businesses.

The multi-agency operation brings together several government departments and security structures, including the South African Police Service, the State Security Agency, Metro Police Departments, Traffic Law Enforcement, the Department of Home Affairs, Correctional Services and the South African National Defence Force.

Beyond law enforcement measures, government has placed significant emphasis on community engagement and conflict prevention. Authorities are working closely with community leaders, civil society organisations, religious groups and local structures to promote peaceful dialogue and prevent further escalation of tensions.

Law enforcement agencies have also been tasked with protecting critical infrastructure and vulnerable communities. This includes safeguarding schools, healthcare facilities, transport routes, businesses and residential areas from disruption, intimidation or violence.

NATJOINTS confirmed that several hotspot areas are being closely monitored, including KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and the Eastern Cape.

Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane condemned all forms of violence and criminality, stressing that unlawful conduct cannot be justified under any circumstances.

“Nothing can justify murder, destruction of property, xenophobic attacks or any criminal conduct,” Dimpane said.

“We do have laws in this country. We have the Constitution, which will not protect any person who acts outside the prescriptions and provisions of the law.”

She further warned that acts of violence and intimidation would not be tolerated, adding: “Violence is not activism. Intimidation is not community protection. Criminal conduct remains criminal conduct.”
