Police are investigating the murder of a 75-year-old woman who was allegedly killed by family members after being accused of witchcraft in a village near Engcobo in the Eastern Cape.
According to police, the elderly woman was allegedly taken to a nearby stream by relatives, where she was assaulted and drowned.
Her body was later discovered naked near the stream, bearing bruises to the head and face, as well as marks consistent with strangulation.
Authorities say the suspects fled the scene and no arrests have been made at this stage.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage after a video allegedly capturing parts of the attack circulated on social media.
Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta strongly condemned the killing, describing it as part of a growing pattern of violence in the Alfred Nzo region.
Fanta said four women have reportedly been killed in the region during May alone.
She urged communities to reject harmful beliefs linked to witchcraft accusations and to protect women and other vulnerable groups from violence.
Police investigations into the murder are continuing.
