President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed Social Development Minister Sisisi Tolashe, following mounting pressure over a series of governance-related controversies.
Ramaphosa has appointed Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities Sindisiwe Chikunga as acting Social Development Minister, pending the appointment of a permanent replacement.
The decision comes after growing calls for Tolashe’s removal amid allegations relating to the use of two luxury vehicles donated to the ANC Women’s League, which were later reportedly registered in the names of her children—raising concerns over transparency and accountability.
She has also faced criticism over alleged irregular appointments of senior staff within the department.
Opposition parties intensified pressure in recent weeks, with the Democratic Alliance laying criminal charges against her for allegedly misleading Parliament. Meanwhile, ActionSA MP Dereleen James also filed charges, accusing Tolashe of providing false information to lawmakers.
The Presidency has not provided further details on the decision, saying the interim arrangement will remain in place until a permanent appointment is made.
