Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie says he wants South Africa to pursue another bid to host the Rugby World Cup despite hesitation from SA Rugby.
South Africa last hosted the global rugby showpiece in 1995, but SA Rugby has previously indicated it has little appetite to launch another bid following the country’s costly and unsuccessful attempt to secure hosting rights for the 2023 tournament.
The bidding process for the 2035 Rugby World Cup officially opened in September 2025, with countries including Argentina, Spain, Japan and Italy already expressing interest.
McKenzie said he is now working to secure private sector backing before approaching government in an effort to revive South Africa’s chances of hosting the event.
“SARU can’t go and make a commitment on behalf of government, but I’m going to work very hard to get sponsors to come on board,” McKenzie said.
“I have started speaking to some sponsors, then I will go to government like we did with Formula 1.”
The minister believes corporate support could strengthen the country’s position and reduce the financial burden associated with hosting a major international sporting event.
