Senior African National Congress officials are currently in a closed-door meeting with National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza to deliberate on the implications of the latest developments in the Phala Phala matter.
The meeting is being attended by ANC Chief Whip Mdumiseni Ntuli and legal counsel Thembeka Ngcukaitobi, who previously represented President Cyril Ramaphosa in the Section 89 proceedings relating to the Phala Phala report.
Ngcukaitobi is expected to brief the party on possible legal options following a recent judgment by the Constitutional Court of South Africa, which ordered Parliament to establish an impeachment committee to investigate potential wrongdoing by the President.
The ruling, delivered last Friday, has placed renewed pressure on Parliament to act on the findings linked to the Phala Phala controversy.
Since the judgment, President Ramaphosa has been consulting with his legal team, led by Ngcukaitobi, as he prepares his response to the court’s directive.
The ANC’s headquarters at Luthuli House has not yet formally addressed the public on the party’s position or next steps.
President Ramaphosa has indicated that he will respect the Constitutional Court’s decision. However, political pressure continues to mount, with some critics calling for his resignation, while opposition parties have signalled their intention to table a motion of no confidence by Wednesday at the latest.
