Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema says he will write to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza requesting the immediate establishment of an impeachment committee in the Phala Phala matter.

Malema’s remarks follow Friday’s landmark ruling by the Constitutional Court of South Africa, where Chief Justice Mandisa Maya found that Parliament acted unlawfully in 2022 when it rejected an independent panel report recommending an impeachment inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The case relates to the theft of more than US$500,000 from Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala Farm in 2020 and the subsequent handling of the matter.

Speaking after the judgment, Malema said the impeachment process should begin without delay and challenged other political parties to support the move.

He also questioned whether the Democratic Alliance would maintain its earlier stance in favour of impeachment proceedings now that political dynamics had shifted.

The Constitutional Court ruled that Parliament must amend Rule 129 of its processes and properly refer the matter for lawful consideration under Section 89 of the Constitution.
