The N3 Toll Concession has warned motorists of hazardous driving conditions after gale-force winds of around 70km/h were recorded in the Van Reenen’s Pass, along the busy N3 route between KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.

The concession says the strong winds are expected to continue affecting the area, raising concerns about reduced visibility, falling debris and potential damage along the route. Motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution, particularly those travelling with trailers, heavy-duty vehicles or light cargo between Ladysmith and Harrismith.

N3TC Chief Operating Officer Thania Dhoogra has appealed to drivers to remain alert and adjust their driving according to rapidly changing weather conditions.

She warned that high-sided vehicles are especially vulnerable in strong wind conditions, increasing the risk of instability on exposed sections of the route.

Along the coast, the South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for damaging winds and rough seas, cautioning that maritime navigation may be affected and small vessels could face capsizing risks.

Forecasters say a slow-moving storm system has been spreading cold, wet and windy conditions across much of South Africa since Tuesday and is expected to persist throughout the week.

In KwaZulu-Natal, coastal and adjacent inland areas remain under an Orange Level 6 warning for severe thunderstorms, while other regions are under a Yellow Level 4 alert.

Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa has urged the public to stay vigilant as conditions worsen.

Department spokesperson Pearl Maseko-Binqose said disaster management teams are on high alert nationwide, with risks including heavy downpours, flash flooding, hail and strong winds.

She added that emergency services are ready to respond to incidents and urged communities to report emergencies promptly and comply with evacuation instructions where necessary.
