The CEO of Madadeni Hospital has been asked to appear before the KwaZulu-Natal Health Portfolio Committee following serious allegations against a medical practitioner at the facility.
A doctor employed at the hospital, Dr Syam Prabhakaran Nair, appeared in the local Magistrates’ Court last Thursday after being arrested on charges of allegedly sexually assaulting four female patients.
The allegations have prompted concern from provincial oversight structures, with the committee describing the matter as deeply troubling.
Portfolio Committee chairperson Imran Keeka said the inquiry will focus on accountability and patient safety within the facility. He emphasised that while the judicial process must be respected, it should not prevent scrutiny of institutional failures.
The committee has instructed the hospital’s leadership to appear on 15 May to explain what was known about the allegations, what action was taken, and how patient protection measures are being implemented.
“We will ensure there are no gaps between criminal proceedings and professional accountability. The safety and dignity of patients in our healthcare facilities are non-negotiable,” Keeka said.
Authorities have also appealed for any additional potential victims or witnesses to come forward as investigations continue.
