Search and rescue teams have recovered the body of a 21-year-old who went missing while swimming at a Durban beach over the weekend.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon at New Beach, where it is understood that a group of 18 learners got into difficulty in the water.
Lifeguards who were passing by at the time noticed the group and managed to rescue 17 of them. However, one learner was reported missing, prompting an extensive search operation that continued throughout the weekend.
The body was recovered on Monday morning at Addington Beach.
eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson Mluleki Mtungwa confirmed that the family has been informed and arrangements are being made for them to identify the deceased.
Mayor Cyril Xaba extended condolences to the family and commended all those involved in the recovery effort.
“We once again convey our condolences to the family of the deceased and hope they will find closure,” Mtungwa said.
The municipality has urged the public to exercise caution when swimming, particularly at non-designated beaches or outside of lifeguard operating hours.
