Bellarmine Mugabe has been sentenced by the Alexandra Regional Court to 24 months’ imprisonment or a R400,000 fine for pointing a toy firearm, as well as an additional 18 months’ imprisonment or a R200,000 fine for being in the country illegally.
The court heard that the charge relating to pointing a firearm stemmed from a separate incident that occurred two weeks before a shooting at his Hyde Park residence.
Mugabe’s co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, received a three-year prison sentence for attempted murder. He was also sentenced to 12 months each for contravening immigration laws, defeating the ends of justice, and possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The case relates to a February shooting incident involving an employee at the Mugabe residence in Hyde Park, north of Johannesburg.
In delivering the judgment, Magistrate Reiner Boshoff also ordered that Mugabe be deported immediately at his own expense.
