Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi and Ekurhuleni City Manager Kagiso Lerutla have each been granted bail of R30,000 by the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court.
The pair face charges of corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice.
As part of their bail conditions, both accused have been instructed not to contact state witnesses. They are expected to return to court on 13 May 2026.
In his ruling, Magistrate Emmanuel Magampa said the court had focused on whether the accused were likely to interfere with witnesses or the investigation.
“The issues in these applications were narrow, limited only to the likelihood of the applicants interfering with witnesses and investigations. It is my view that the applicants have discharged the onus on the balance of probabilities, and that the interests of justice permit their release on bail,” Magampa said.
