An investigation is underway following a fatal multi-vehicle collision in Northdale, Pietermaritzburg, which claimed one life and left several others injured.
The crash, involving two cars and a tow truck, occurred on Brixham Road on Tuesday night. Emergency services, including KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services, were dispatched to the scene.
According to spokesperson Craig Botha, paramedics arrived to find one of the vehicles engulfed in flames. First responders managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading until the fire department arrived.
“Tragically, one person was trapped inside the burning vehicle and was declared dead at the scene,” said Botha. “Despite urgent efforts by responders, two other patients sustained serious spinal and burn injuries, while four others suffered minor injuries.”
Preliminary reports suggest that the tow truck, which was responding to a separate minor incident, may have lost control and collided with the other vehicles, igniting the fire.
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear, and police have launched an investigation. Authorities were present at the scene as emergency crews worked to assist the injured and secure the area.
