At least six people have died following a suspected food contamination incident in Mmotong-wa-Bogobe in the Polokwane district, authorities have confirmed.
The victims include a seven-year-old girl, while more than 70 other mourners were rushed to hospital after consuming food believed to have been contaminated with poison during a funeral service held over the weekend.
Local officials say the death toll includes residents from surrounding areas, with the fatalities reported in communities including Ga Maja, Ga Mashashane and Seshego.
Polokwane municipal ward councillor Jacob Ntlemo said several of those admitted for treatment have since been discharged after showing signs of recovery.
“They are around 74 people and then six people died… Those who were admitted yesterday and started feeling better were discharged,” Ntlemo said.
Health authorities are continuing to monitor patients still receiving treatment in hospital, while investigations are underway to determine the cause and source of the suspected contamination.
Officials have not yet confirmed whether foul play is suspected, but have urged communities to remain cautious as enquiries continue.
