Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers says it is ramping up relief efforts in parts of the Western Cape following widespread flooding caused by heavy weekend rains.
Several areas across the province were inundated, with the organisation reporting a surge in distress calls particularly from informal settlements where homes have been severely affected.
Spokesperson Ali Sablay said response teams have already reached multiple communities and are expanding operations.
“Our teams will mainly focus on the humanitarian side of the distribution, and that we have managed to achieve in 13 of the areas yesterday. And today we will be extending beyond those 13 areas we’ve reached so far,” Sablay said.
He added that additional calls for assistance were received overnight as further rainfall was recorded in the early hours of Tuesday.
“Our teams will be trying to assist and going on the ground to do assessments in those areas as well,” he said.
The organisation confirmed that ongoing assessments will guide further interventions as teams continue to respond to affected communities.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant as wet weather conditions persist across the province.
