The Gauteng Department of Health has issued a warning over a significant increase in malaria cases across the province.

In the first three months of 2026, health authorities recorded 414 cases and 11 deaths, a marked rise from the 230 cases and one death reported during the same period in 2025.

Officials have linked the surge to travel to high-risk areas, including Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and neighbouring countries such as Mozambique.

Residents are being urged to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with malaria, including fever, chills and fatigue.

The department has also encouraged those travelling to malaria-endemic regions to take precautionary measures to reduce the risk of infection.
