Six suspects wanted in connection with a series of violent crimes, including a shootout with police last month, have been arrested in Umhlali on the north coast of Durban.
Police said the group is linked to serious offences, including murder, as well as a string of house and business robberies that allegedly terrorised communities in Shayamoya, Nkobongo, Riet Valley and Itete.
According to authorities, the suspects were tracked down and cornered during a coordinated operation conducted within the Umhlali policing precinct.
Paul Magwaza said the arrests were made on 12 April 2026 following investigations into a 28 March shootout incident in which suspects allegedly opened fire on police before evading arrest.
“The suspects, who were wanted for serious crimes, were traced and cornered in the Shayamoya area within the Umhlali policing precinct,” Magwaza said. He added that three arrests were initially made following the shootout, with further suspects apprehended as investigations progressed.
Police believe the group may be linked to additional cases across the iLembe District Municipality and have confirmed that investigations are continuing to establish the full extent of their alleged criminal activities.
Authorities say further arrests have not been ruled out as the probe widens.
