The family of murdered Emfuleni Local Municipality accountant Martha Rantsofu has expressed relief after the South African Police Service Political Killings Task Team took over the investigation into her death.
Rantsofu was shot execution-style at a tyre shop in Vanderbijlpark last month in what is believed to be a targeted killing.
Reports indicate that she had uncovered alleged corruption and fraud within the municipality prior to her death.
Her brother, Tefo Rantsofu, said the family only became aware after the murder that she had opened an intimidation case with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation.
He said investigators informed him that her killing may be linked to the case she had filed.
Rantsofu also raised concerns about local law enforcement, alleging that some officials may be compromised.
He welcomed the involvement of the Political Killings Task Team, saying it has given the family renewed hope that the case will see progress and potentially lead to a breakthrough.
