Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a suspect who escaped following a shootout in Mofolo, Soweto, on Wednesday night.

The incident resulted in four suspects being shot and killed, while two others were arrested during a joint operation involving the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section, Gauteng Police Highway Patrol, and a private security company.

According to Gauteng Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale, the operation was initiated after authorities received intelligence about a planned armed robbery at a local business.

Police tracked down the vehicles linked to the suspects near the targeted premises. However, upon noticing they were under surveillance, the suspects attempted to flee in two vehicles, prompting a pursuit.

“A high-speed chase and shootout ensued, resulting in four suspects being fatally wounded. Two suspects were arrested at the scene,” Mogale said.

The arrested individuals are expected to face charges including business robbery, attempted murder, and possession of illegal firearms.

Police are now searching for a seventh suspect who managed to escape on foot during the chaos. Investigations are ongoing.
