Some residents of Tafelsig in Mitchell’s Plain on the Cape Flats have expressed optimism following the deployment of members of the South African National Defence Force to the area.
The soldiers have joined police in ongoing search operations aimed at tackling crime, with a focus on properties suspected to be linked to drug dealing and gang activity. Authorities are also searching for illegal firearms.
Community members say the increased security presence has brought a sense of relief, with many hopeful that it will improve safety in the area.
One resident welcomed the deployment, saying it provides reassurance, particularly for those commuting in the early hours of the morning.
“I wish they could be here more often when we go to work early. I really feel at ease, especially because this is the first time they are coming here,” the resident said.
The operation forms part of broader efforts to curb gang violence and restore stability in crime-affected communities on the Cape Flats.
