Residents in KwaZulu-Natal are being urged to prepare for a wet and potentially stormy weekend as a cold front moves just south-east of the country.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast widespread rainfall across the province, with a Yellow Level 2 warning already in place for the western and extreme southern regions on Friday.

According to SAWS, there is a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers across most parts of the province, raising the likelihood of disruptive weather conditions.

In addition to the rain, the weather service has issued an advisory warning of uncomfortable weather conditions along the coast and nearby inland areas.

“Hot and humid weather will result in extremely uncomfortable conditions along the coast and adjacent interior today,” SAWS said in a statement.

SAWS forecaster Masego Nhlapho indicated that the unsettled weather is expected to persist throughout the weekend, with another cold front set to pass through.

“We expect a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers across KZN for Saturday and Sunday, and warnings will be issued as the two days approach,” said Nhlapho.

She added that severe thunderstorms are likely over most parts of the province during this period, although temperatures are not expected to drop significantly.

“Conditions will remain cool to warm on both Saturday and Sunday,” she said.
