A major fire continues to burn at the historic Botha Sigcau Building, leaving the structure extensively damaged.

Emergency services responded to the blaze, which broke out on Tuesday, and remain on site working to contain flames in several sections of the building.

The Eastern Cape provincial government has tasked the Department of Public Works with assessing the extent of the damage once the fire is fully under control.

Hundreds of employees who work in the building have been left in limbo, with many awaiting direction on alternative office arrangements. The facility accommodates at least 11 departments, including education services, and some workers have attempted to continue operations despite the ongoing fire.

Authorities have confirmed that no injuries or fatalities have been reported at this stage.

Concerns around maintenance and safety at the building have reportedly been raised over several years, but remain unresolved.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow as more information becomes available.
