Streaming platform Showmax will stop accepting new subscribers from 31 March and will officially shut down on 30 April, according to a notice issued by MultiChoice to its customers on Thursday.
The move follows an earlier announcement by French broadcaster Canal+, which recently acquired MultiChoice and confirmed plans to discontinue the service.
Canal+ said the decision was driven by a need to prioritise financial discipline and optimise investments, citing sustained annual losses at Showmax as unsustainable.
In its latest communication, MultiChoice confirmed that Showmax original productions and selected content will be migrated to DStv Stream.
Subscribers have until 31 March to renew their subscriptions or redeem vouchers. From 1 April, no new subscriptions or renewals will be processed.
Canal+ has previously indicated that the closure of Showmax will not result in job losses.
