Five people have died following a head-on collision between a truck and a light motor vehicle on the R566 near Rama City.
Authorities say the crash occurred on Wednesday night in Akasia. The light motor vehicle, identified as a Suzuki Ertiga, was carrying five occupants at the time of the collision.
According to Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane, preliminary reports indicate that the truck was travelling west when it struck a large rock in the roadway.
“The driver reportedly lost control after hitting the object and veered into the oncoming lane, where the truck collided head-on with the Suzuki Ertiga,” Zwane said.
He added that the area is believed to be prone to incidents involving rocks placed on the road.
The RTMC’s crash investigation unit is currently on the scene, with further updates expected as investigations continue.
