An act of compassion has transformed the life of an elderly delivery driver after a woman in Manchester helped spark a wave of generosity that raised nearly $1 million.
Brittany Smith was surprised when she checked her Ring Doorbell Camera and saw an older man, later identified as Richard, slowly making his way up her porch steps to deliver a DoorDash order.
Struggling to climb the stairs and relying on the handrail for support, the delivery left a lasting impression on Smith.
“This poor guy is struggling to get up my stairs to deliver my very capable daughter her Starbucks,” she said.
Moved by the moment, Smith initially tried to increase his tip, but when that wasn’t possible through the app, she shared the footage online in hopes of identifying him.
A local resident soon recognised the man as Richard, allowing Smith to visit him personally and offer a $200 tip. During their conversation, Richard revealed that financial hardship had forced him out of retirement after his wife lost her job and required expensive medication.
Determined to help, Smith launched a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe with the goal of allowing Richard to retire once again.
The story quickly gained traction online, drawing widespread support and donations from across the globe. In total, nearly $940,000 was raised through more than 32,000 contributions.
“I had no idea that I was going to gain that much traction,” Smith said. “Richard said he hasn’t slept in two days because he can’t stop watching the GoFundMe.”
What began as an ordinary delivery has since become an extraordinary example of how a simple act of empathy can inspire life-changing generosity.
