The Department of Basic Education has raised alarm over a dangerous emerging trend among school pupils known as “chuffing,” following the circulation of disturbing videos on social media.

The department says it became aware of the practice after footage surfaced showing learners inhaling chemical fumes using improvised devices. In some instances, pupils dressed in school uniform were seen inhaling contents from fire extinguishers.

Officials have strongly condemned the behaviour, warning that it carries severe and potentially fatal health risks. These include brain damage, respiratory failure and sudden death.

The trend has also drawn concern from various authorities, including emergency services, due to the immediate dangers associated with inhaling toxic substances.

In response, the department has urged schools to strengthen safety protocols. Measures include conducting random inspections and closely monitoring items brought onto school premises to prevent access to harmful substances.

Schools have also been encouraged to intensify awareness programmes focusing on substance abuse, peer pressure and risky behaviour.

Meanwhile, parents and guardians are being called on to engage with their children about the dangers of substance abuse and harmful social media trends, and to remain vigilant for any warning signs of risky behaviour.
