A warehouse fire has damaged part of an industrial facility in Hammarsdale, west of Durban, after flames broke out at Coveway Industrial Park on Sunday.
Firefighters from eThekwini Fire and Emergency Services managed to contain the blaze before it spread to neighbouring businesses.
The fire spread through large sections of the Inkulu Pipe Solutions facility, where mining pipes were stored in the warehouse. The flames quickly engulfed parts of the property, destroying significant assets including a hyster machine, a company truck and two vehicles on site.
eThekwini Fire spokesperson Sibusiso Dlamini said crews acted quickly to bring the fire under control.
“Our fire teams quickly deployed three water streams to contain the fire and protect surrounding companies. The blaze was extinguished shortly afterwards. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is still unknown,” Dlamini said.
Firefighters from five stations, including Pinetown, Hammarsdale, Cato Ridge and Gillitts, assisted in the operation.
Dlamini said large quantities of plastic pipes, ranging from 16 millimetres to 1.2 metres in diameter, were destroyed in the fire and the storage facility was extensively damaged.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze.
