Four people have died in a fire that broke out in Delft early Friday morning, authorities confirmed.
Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services said firefighters were called to the scene where multiple structures were ablaze.
Spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said the cause of the fire remains unknown, and the South African Police Service is investigating.
“Three structures comprising a fruit and vegetable stall, a gym, and a gas cylinder outlet were damaged. Around 24 cylinders were removed and placed on the pavement away from the hot zone. Sadly, the bodies of four adult males were found with fatal burn injuries inside the makeshift gym,” Carelse said.
Police have opened an investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the fatal blaze.
