South Africa’s arts and entertainment industry is mourning the loss of veteran performer Soli Philander, who has died at the age of 65.

Philander, a celebrated actor, presenter, director and comedian, was widely regarded as one of the country’s most versatile and recognisable cultural figures, with a career spanning theatre, television, radio and film.

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie paid tribute in a social media post, describing Philander as someone who played an important role in strengthening South Africa’s democracy through storytelling and satire.

“For decades, Soli Philander brought laughter, insight and warmth to audiences everywhere in our country,” McKenzie said. “Whether on stage, on television or behind a microphone, he had the rare gift of making people laugh while reminding us who we are.”

He added that performers like Philander help society reflect on itself and find common ground. “Actors like Soli play a role in our democracy. They remind us of our shared humanity.”

Philander became a household name as the longtime host of the Afrikaans music quiz show Liriekeraai and the game show Vat ’n Kans. He also appeared in television productions such as Off The Record, which poked fun at election politics, and the multilingual drama Reflections.

On the big screen, his credits included roles in films such as Verkeerde Nommer, The Road to Mecca, Die Prince van Pretoria, Drumbeats, Kaalgat tussen die Daisies, Dias Santana, Far from the Castle, and The Umbrella Men: Escape from Robben Island.

A familiar face on the theatre circuit, Philander remained active on stage in recent years and was part of the pantomime Pinocchio in one of his final performances.

Colleagues and fans have remembered him as a sharp wit and generous performer whose humour often carried deeper social commentary.
