Five officials from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) have been dismissed after being found guilty of fraud and corruption, as the agency intensifies efforts to clamp down on misconduct within its ranks.
The dismissals follow internal disciplinary proceedings linked to the arrests of eight officials last year. While five cases have now been finalised, three remain pending.
The implicated employees were stationed at Sassa’s Johannesburg office, which was temporarily closed during the investigation but has since reopened and resumed operations.
Agency spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said the action sends a clear message that wrongdoing will not be tolerated.
“Fraud and corruption will not be tolerated. Accountability is non-negotiable and any official found guilty will face decisive consequences, reaffirming the agency’s commitment to protecting public resources,” he said.
Sassa has indicated that investigations and internal controls will continue to be strengthened to safeguard social grant funds and ensure services reach intended beneficiaries without interference.
The agency added that rooting out corruption remains a priority a necessary clean-up to ensure public trust is not the next casualty.
