Two suspects have been shot dead during a gun battle with police in the uMgungundlovu District following a dramatic cash-in-transit robbery in Verulam, north of Durban.

Police tracked the suspects to Edendale near Pietermaritzburg in the early hours of Tuesday after launching an intensive manhunt.

Authorities believe the pair were linked to an armed gang that bombed a cash van on Jabu Ngcobo Road on Monday afternoon.

Emergency responders said about 10 heavily armed suspects travelling in two vehicles intercepted the security van before using explosives to blow it open. A video circulating on social media appears to show the group forcing security guards to kneel on the ground before the vehicle was breached.

An undisclosed amount of cash and several firearms were reportedly stolen before the suspects fled towards Inanda.

No security personnel were injured during the robbery.

Police have confirmed that investigations are continuing at the Edendale site, which remains an active crime scene, as officers work to identify and locate additional suspects connected to the heist.
