Emergency crews are racing against time to reach five workers trapped underground at Ekapa Mine, where rising water levels continue to hamper rescue operations following a mud rush incident.
Mine management confirmed that teams are pumping water out of the affected shaft, which plunges nearly 800 metres below ground. However, access to the workers remains limited, and communication with those trapped has been lost.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, prompting an immediate emergency response and ongoing recovery efforts.
Local authorities say additional support is on standby. Sol Plaatje Local Municipality has placed its emergency services on high alert, ready to assist as needed.
Municipal communications manager Thabo Mothibi said the municipality responded to an early-morning call and remains committed to providing all necessary resources to support the rescue.
Meanwhile, Minerals Council South Africa has deployed a specialist team to the site to assist mine management and provide support to the families of the missing workers.
Authorities say efforts will continue around the clock as hopes remain high for a safe recovery.
