Police National Commissioner General Fanie Masemola has instructed security forces to act swiftly and decisively against any disruptions during Thursday evening’s State of the Nation Address, stressing that law enforcement must uphold order without fear or favour.
Masemola addressed members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and metro police during an integrated parade in Cape Town ahead of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address at City Hall.
He said the primary objective of the joint deployment is to ensure the event proceeds in a safe and stable environment.
“You are here to ensure that the President’s address takes place in a conducive and peaceful environment,” Masemola told officers.
While calling for firm action against any unlawful behaviour, he emphasised that operations must remain within the bounds of the Constitution and the law.
“You must respect all laws and abide by the Constitution. Those who cross the line must be dealt with decisively, in accordance with the law. Do your work without hesitation,” he said. “Make sure this SONA goes down in history as one that was policed well.”
Several specialised units, including Public Order Police and the SANDF, have been deployed as part of a coordinated security plan aimed at preventing disruptions and ensuring the safety of attendees.
Heightened security measures are expected around the Cape Town CBD as authorities prepare for the high-profile national event.
