Four suspects believed to be linked to a string of violent crimes were shot and killed during a police operation at an informal settlement in Inanda, north of Durban, on Tuesday night.
KwaZulu-Natal police said officers acted on intelligence that the men, allegedly connected to multiple cases of murder, attempted murder, and robbery, were hiding in the Amatikwe area. The information led investigators to a two-room shack where the suspects were believed to be staying.
According to provincial police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda, officers came under fire upon arriving at the scene, triggering an exchange of gunfire.
“When police arrived at the scene, a shootout ensued between the suspects and police, which resulted in the four wanted suspects sustaining fatal gunshot wounds,” Netshiunda said.
Police recovered four pistols and several rounds of ammunition from the scene. No officers were injured during the confrontation.
Authorities say investigations into the suspects’ alleged involvement in violent crimes are ongoing, as police continue efforts to curb criminal activity in the area.
