Disaster management teams across KwaZulu-Natal remain on high alert following a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms affecting large parts of the province.

The South African Weather Service has warned that southern regions of KZN are likely to experience the most intense conditions, including heavy rain, strong winds, hail, and frequent lightning. Authorities caution that the storms could trigger flooding, damage infrastructure, and create hazardous travel conditions.

Senzelwe Mzila, spokesperson for the provincial Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), urged residents to exercise caution.

“The MEC for COGTA, Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, has placed all our teams on high alert,” Mzila said. “These teams are coordinating with social partners and communities to ensure that the severe weather does not pose a risk to human lives. The districts expected to be most affected include uGu, Harry Gwala, and parts of uThukela and uMgungundlovu.”

Officials have advised communities to stay updated on weather alerts, avoid unnecessary travel, and report emergencies promptly as the province braces for potentially dangerous conditions.
