A man has died and a woman has been left critically injured following a serious vehicle crash on the N3 between Lions River and Balgowan in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Emergency teams from KZN Midlands EMS Howick responded to the scene, where they found a husband and wife trapped inside their vehicle after the collision.
Spokesperson Ian Winterboer said one of the occupants sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead at the scene, while the second patient required urgent advanced medical care.
“One person sustained fatal injuries and was declared deceased on scene, while the second person was in a critical condition requiring urgent advanced medical care,” Winterboer said. “The Jaws of Life, along with other specialised rescue equipment, was deployed to safely extract the critically injured patient.”
The couple’s dog, which was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, also suffered injuries and was transported to a nearby veterinary hospital for specialised treatment.
The cause of the accident has not yet been confirmed, and authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers on the busy N3 corridor, a route all too familiar to emergency responders.
