Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has confirmed he will not seek re-election when his term comes to an end in April, setting the stage for a new leadership contest within the party.
Steenhuisen made the announcement on Wednesday, with the nomination process for the party’s top position expected to open later this month. His departure marks the end of an era for the DA, which he has led since 2019, and has prompted speculation over who will take the reins next. For now, the race is wide open.
While the leadership question looms, the party has shifted its focus to preparations for the upcoming local government elections. The DA unveiled the first phase of its Western Cape mayoral candidates, naming contenders for Beaufort West, the Central Karoo District, Hessequa, Kannaland and Laingsburg.
Party leaders described the local polls as the most significant political priority on this year’s calendar, emphasising their importance in consolidating support at municipal level.
The DA has also identified all metropolitan municipalities as strategic targets, signalling an intensified campaign effort in key urban areas.
Further announcements on both leadership nominations and additional candidates are expected in the coming weeks.
