Convicted serial rapist, murderer, and notorious prison escapee Thabo Bester is contesting his transfer to eBongweni Super-Maximum Correctional Centre.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) says the move is being made due to security concerns. National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale explained that the transfers of Bester and fellow inmate Vusumuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala are intended to protect both prisoners and prevent potential security risks.
Bester’s legal team has filed for an interdict to block the transfer until they can formally submit representations and receive written reasons for the move.
The inmate is also requesting placement at a facility within Gauteng, even if it is not the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre, from which he was removed.
The case is expected to be heard in the coming days as legal arguments unfold over the high-profile transfer.
