President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep sadness following the death of a five-year-old boy who was swept away by floodwaters in Mbaula village outside Giyani in Limpopo.
The President was speaking during a visit to the village, where heavy rains have left a trail of destruction, with at least 36 homes damaged or destroyed.
Ramaphosa said government would provide assistance to families who have lost their homes and livelihoods as a result of the flooding. He added that authorities are in the process of compiling detailed records of affected households to ensure support reaches those in need.
“Our people will be taken care of. The details of every household and every person are now being gathered, and we will make sure they are supported,” Ramaphosa said. “Even those who have gone to stay with relatives will receive help as government works to assist them in rebuilding their lives.”
Disaster management teams continue to assess the full extent of the damage as relief efforts get underway across the area.
