Western Cape authorities have issued a warning that Knysna could run out of water within 10 days unless levels in the Akkerkloof Dam improve. The dam is currently at just 15% capacity.
Across the province, dam levels have dropped to 58%, down from 80% at the same time last year. Officials say the situation is critical, and the province may request that cabinet declare a national disaster due to the combined threat of fires and water shortages.
Authorities are urging residents to conserve water as emergency measures are considered.
This is a developing story.
