Parts of KwaZulu-Natal are expected to experience severe weather conditions later on Wednesday, with disaster management teams placed on high alert ahead of predicted thunderstorms.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms affecting the western, Midlands and northern regions of the province. A separate Level 2 warning has also been issued for the coastal areas and the adjacent interior.

SAWS forecaster Nhlanhla Sithole said the storms are expected to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, excessive lightning and possible large hail.

“The downpours have the potential to cause flooding of susceptible roads and settlements. The storms may also be accompanied by strong winds and excessive lightning. These conditions are expected over most parts of the province, except the southeastern areas,” Sithole said.

Areas that could be affected include eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mandeni, Maphumulo, Mkhambathini, Mthonjaneni, Ndwedwe, Ray Nkonyeni, uMdoni, uMhlathuze, uMlalazi and uMzumbe.

Meanwhile, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Thulaswizwe Buthelezi has instructed the Provincial Disaster Management Centre to work closely with district and local municipalities to ensure full preparedness.

KZN COGTA spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila said all disaster management structures have been activated.

“Our teams are monitoring the weather patterns closely and are positioned to respond rapidly to any incidents. We appeal to residents to cooperate with instructions from law enforcement and emergency personnel,” Mzila said.
