Heavy machinery, including a large crane, was moved up the hill in Redcliffe, Verulam, on Friday as rescue teams worked to reach workers trapped beneath the collapsed structure of the New Ahobilam Temple of Protection.
Disaster management and search-and-rescue teams gathered at the base of the site to map out a safe access route through the unstable debris. IPSS Medical confirmed that at least two people have died, while three others remain trapped under the rubble.
Amid the frantic efforts, four visibly traumatised survivors covered in dust and wearing torn clothing emerged from the side of the partially collapsed structure. Paramedics treated them on-site as they attempted to stabilise those who managed to escape on their own.
Officials say the rescue operation remains extremely delicate due to the risk of further collapse. Teams are determining how to cut through thick layers of concrete and steel without endangering those still believed to be alive beneath the wreckage.
Families of the trapped workers gathered nearby, many in tears and desperately seeking updates, while others made hurried phone calls to relatives in search of information.
Eight injured workers have already been transported to hospital after being pulled from the site earlier in the day.
The collapse occurred during construction on a four-storey extension project at the temple, which opened only last year and has been undergoing continued development. A concrete truck was still positioned at the scene when emergency responders arrived, highlighting the active nature of the work at the time of the incident.
