Traffic volumes along the N3 in KwaZulu-Natal are expected to rise sharply from this weekend, with the N3 Toll Concession warning of heavier-than-usual congestion as the province readies itself to welcome more than a million holidaymakers.
Deputy Transport Minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa on Friday led a multi-disciplinary operation at the Mooi River toll plaza, where he confirmed that 800 traffic officers will be deployed across the country to enforce road regulations and enhance safety over the festive period.
Hlengwa also voiced concern over the behaviour of truck drivers on the stretch between Mooi River and Durban, describing their conduct as reckless and a major challenge for authorities.
“We have identified 20 priority routes across the country, and this corridor remains a problem,” he said. “Truck drivers are reckless and irresponsible in how they navigate traffic. We will be meeting with the Trucking Association next week to ensure joint messaging and engagement with drivers. They are making our work very difficult.”
Authorities are urging motorists to plan ahead, exercise patience, and remain vigilant as holiday traffic builds.
