The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in KwaZulu-Natal has called on minibus taxi drivers to exercise caution on the roads this festive season, warning against fatigue and reckless behaviour.
Santaco spokesperson Sfiso Shangase advised drivers to take breaks, stay hydrated, and, if necessary, arrange relief drivers to ensure they reach their destinations safely.
“There is a noticeable increase in disregard for road rules during the holiday season,” Shangase said. He confirmed that Santaco has met with the KZN Department of Transport to finalise the Hlokomela road safety campaign, which will see inspectors stationed at taxi ranks and on roads to monitor compliance.
Shangase also urged taxi operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. “The biggest concerns are overloading, driver fatigue, and adherence to traffic rules. We plead with minibus taxi owners to maintain their vehicles so that we can have an accident-free December,” he said.
Drivers from neighbouring provinces transporting passengers into KZN were also urged to check their vehicles before embarking on journeys. “Some of the vehicles involved in accidents come from outside KZN. We are asking that they ensure their taxis are safe and roadworthy when entering the province,” Shangase added.
