The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has advised motorists to plan for significant traffic disruptions on Saturday as the African Bank Soweto Marathon gets underway.
The annual event features 42km, 21km and 10km races, drawing thousands of runners through multiple Soweto neighbourhoods.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said officers will be deployed along the routes to manage traffic and ensure safety, with extensive road closures scheduled between 4am and 3pm.
Roads in Nasrec, Riverlea, Orlando, Diepkloof, Pimville, Rockville, Jabulani, Central Western Jabavu, Mofolo, Dube, Kliptown, Pennyville and Aeroton will be affected. Major routes such as the Soweto Highway, Randshow Road, Nasrec Road, Chris Hani Road, Modjaji Street, Klipspruit Valley Road, Union Road, Koma Road, Elias Motsoaledi Road, Mphuti Street, Machaba Drive, Mzilikazi Street, Mncube Drive, Mtipa Street, Kumalo Main Road, Vilakazi Street and Armitage Street will also be impacted.
Motorists are urged to avoid these areas where possible and allow extra travel time.
